A dedicated search engine for animated GIFs salvaged from GeoCities, rebuilt in 2025 with semantic search. Type a term and it returns matching GIFs from the rescued corpus; its open search endpoint also lets this site query it directly. Reach for it when researching 1990s web aesthetics or hunting a specific piece of early-web imagery.

Why it’s useful & how it works

GifCities is the go-to resource when you need to find or study the animated GIFs that defined 1990s web culture, rescued from GeoCities before Yahoo shut it down in 2009. A 2025 rebuild added semantic search, so you can type a concept like 'dragon' or 'under construction' and get visually related results rather than just filename matches. You search directly on gifcities.org and Echo can also query it directly, returning matching GIFs without leaving the page.

What’s inside

Over 4.5 million animated GIFs drawn from the GeoCities closing crawl, with roughly 1.6 million unique images. The collection covers the full range of GeoCities-era graphics, from dancing skeletons to sparkly dividers.
