Academic Torrents
A platform for distributing research datasets and academic data over BitTorrent, petabytes of legitimately shared material. You can search and browse collections freely, and reads need no key or account. Reach for it when a large public dataset is easier to fetch as a torrent than from a slow or fragile institutional server.
Why it’s useful & how it works
Academic Torrents is the only torrent index in this set built exclusively for legitimate research data distribution. It was founded in 2013 to solve a real problem: large scientific datasets are too big for most institutional servers and too slow to download without peer-to-peer technology. When you find a dataset here, you know it was uploaded by a researcher or institution with intent to share. Echo can query it directly via its keyless API and return results without leaving the interface.
What’s inside
Over 127 terabytes of research datasets as of late 2024, covering machine learning corpora, genomic data, social-science archives, and more. The number of individual collections runs to hundreds, with some single datasets exceeding several terabytes.

Did a real search return anything?
Returned nothing · 0 results for the sample query · median 969 ms · stable across runs
Has petabytes of data, but the browse/search scrape path returned 0, needs the correct search endpoint, not actually empty.
Benchmark coverage
Found 0 of 10 test items (0%) in the Torrents cluster. Median response 318 ms.
By how well known the item is: 0/2 well-known, 0/6 mid, 0/2 obscure .
