Why it’s useful & how it works

HathiTrust brings together scans contributed by major North American and European research libraries, so it often holds volumes too specialized to appear elsewhere. You search the catalogue by title, author, ISBN, or OCLC number on the website; nearly 40 percent of the collection is in the public domain and readable by anyone worldwide, while in-copyright volumes return catalogue metadata and a snippet view only. Full-text access to restricted volumes requires affiliation with a member institution.
