Europeana

Europe's cultural heritage aggregator, bringing together more than 50 million digitized items from European galleries, libraries, archives, and museums. You search it on its website; an API is also available with a free key. The natural first stop when looking for digitized European cultural material across many institutions at once.

Why it’s useful & how it works

Europeana is the go-to starting point when you are not sure which European institution holds what you need: it searches across galleries, libraries, archives, and museums from dozens of countries in a single query. You search by keyword, filter by type (image, text, sound, video), date range, or country, and each result links back to the holding institution where you can access the full item. Its breadth is unmatched for cross-border European cultural research.

What’s inside

More than 57 million digitized items contributed by thousands of cultural institutions across Europe, spanning art, manuscripts, photographs, maps, music recordings, and film.
