Why it’s useful & how it works
The David Rumsey collection is the premier online destination for high-quality historical map scans, with a particular strength in 18th and 19th century North American, South American, and world atlases. A notable feature is georeferencing: many maps have been aligned to modern coordinates so you can overlay them on a contemporary basemap and compare how geography has changed. You search by keyword, place, date, or publisher on the site's own interface, which Echo links you to.

Over 148,000 maps and related images available online in high resolution, with the full physical collection exceeding 200,000 items, predominantly from the 16th through 20th centuries.
