Chronicling America (LoC)
The Library of Congress's collection of historic US newspaper pages from the 1700s through the 1960s, with OCR full text so the pages themselves are searchable. You search it through the loc.gov website, which can also return plain JSON without a key. Indispensable for finding period news coverage, names, and events in American newspapers. Note that the legacy chroniclingamerica.loc.gov address is deprecated — use loc.gov.
Why it’s useful & how it works
FIXED: the collection ?fo=json returns 200 from the DIRECT IP (LoC blocks datacenter proxies — route direct). Keyless. Legacy chroniclingamerica.loc.gov host deprecated. Niche/link-catalogue tier.
