Chronicling America (LoC)
The Library of Congress's collection of historic US newspaper pages from the 1700s through the 1960s, with OCR full text so the pages themselves are searchable. You search it through the loc.gov website, which can also return plain JSON without a key. Indispensable for finding period news coverage, names, and events in American newspapers. Note that the legacy chroniclingamerica.loc.gov address is deprecated, use loc.gov.
Why it’s useful & how it works
Chronicling America is essential for finding how events, people, and places were reported in real time across American history: its full-text OCR means you can search the actual words printed on newspaper pages, not just titles or metadata. Coverage spans from the late 1700s through 1963, with papers from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. You search by keyword, date range, state, or publication title through the loc.gov website, which Echo links you to directly.
What’s inside
More than 23 million digitized newspaper pages from thousands of historic US publications, covering roughly 1770 to 1963, with full-text search enabled by optical character recognition.
