old-web-emulation

oldweb.today

Lets you open archived web pages inside emulated vintage browsers, all running in your modern browser, with content pulled from Wayback and other Memento archives. Use is entirely interactive on the site, pick a browser and a date, enter a URL; there is no API. Researchers reach for it when how a page rendered matters as much as what it said.

Son utilité et son fonctionnement

oldweb.today is the tool to reach for when how a page rendered is just as important as what it said. You enter a URL, choose a date, and select a browser, and the site launches an emulated version of that browser (Netscape, Mosaic, or various editions of Internet Explorer) running inside your current browser, loading the archived page without any visual modernisation. Content is pulled from the Wayback Machine and other Memento-compatible archives. Everything happens interactively on the site; there is no API and Echo links you there directly.

Ce qu’elle contient

oldweb.today itself does not hold its own archive; it draws on the content of the Wayback Machine and other Memento-standard archives, giving access to the billions of captures those services hold. The browser emulation layer covers major browsers from the early 1990s through the mid-2000s.
