Stract

An open-source search engine, funded by NLnet, designed to be customizable and self-hostable. Searching is done on its website; its public API is undocumented, so we link to the search form rather than query it. An option when you want an independent, transparent index, or your own instance of one.

Warum es nützlich ist & wie es funktioniert

Stract is a fully open-source search engine, funded by the NLnet Foundation through the EU's Next Generation Internet programme, designed to be transparent about how it ranks results and to give users control over those rankings. You can filter results to blogs, IndieWeb content, or educational sites, and the source code is publicly available for anyone to inspect or self-host. Echo links you to Stract's search form since its public API is undocumented; you search there directly.

Was drinsteckt

Stract maintains its own independent web index built by its own crawler. The exact size is not publicly disclosed, but it covers the general web at a scale sufficient for everyday search across a broad range of topics, with a particular focus on surfacing independent and non-commercial content.
